What is Soju ?
the most famous alcoholic beverage produced in Korea. Soju is clear, neutral spirit usually distilled from grains. Although it can be made from rice, soju is not a “rice wine” and it’s very different from sake, which hails from Japan. Soju is distilled, like vodka, but has about half of the alcohol by volume
How to drink Soju ?
The most common way to drink soju is neat, chilled, and from a shot glass, which you can shoot or sip
What is Makgeolli ?
Makgeolli can be thought of as a “raw” or “original” rice wine. If you've heard of takju before, it was likely in reference to makgeolli. The alcohol does not typically go through distillation, meaning it retains a low ABV, often around that of strong beer: 8%. In Korea, makgeolli is typically not pasteurized, meaning it retains many of its original, earthy, tangy flavors. Most forms will contain a suspension of chalky sediments, making makgeolli appear cloudy
How to say “Cheers” in Korean ?
The word for “cheers” in the Korean language is 건배 (geonbae). This means “empty glass,” so is similar to the expression “bottom’s up.”
